'ACCIDENT' AT CHRISTMAS?

We all know that Christmas can be a stressful time, and when alcohol frees up the inhibitions sometimes we do things we later regret.

If you do find that you have had unsafe sex and are regretting it, help is available as you can get PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) at your local A&E Department. PEP is a course of treatment that may prevent HIV infection after the virus has entered the body. If you ask for PEP the staff will assess you to see if you meet the prescribing guidelines.

Here are some things you should know about PEP:

·         It isn’t guaranteed to work.

·         It has to be taken  as soon as possible after unsafe sex—and no more than 72 hours at the maximum

·         It’s a course of treatment that last  4 weeks

·         There can be severe side effects.

·         It’s not a ‘cure’ for HIV.

·          Using condoms and lube for sex remains the best way of staying safe from HIV.
